I like expensive things. But it’s not like I pick out expensive things on purpose, it’s just that whatever I pick turns out to be expensive, you know? And due to my current financial situation (AKA: semi-broke-not-really-financially-responsible recent graduate), I cannot afford such items. Whenever I see the word “SALE” at shops I feel a sense of duty. Like, “Yo Troy, there’s a sale. Here’s your chance to get something real fresh. You’re broke. Do it.” And who am I to not listen to myself, right?
Case in point:
Today I walk into Nomad (a shop that sells some quality shit AND they play hip hop on the regular, so obvs this store is my jams) and some chick is like “Hey I really like your socks” and I cooly (but really, I’m freaking out inside) say “Thanks.”
The reps tell me there’s a sale going on. 25% off and an additional 10% just for today. My mind is going bananas. This store sells Junya Watanabe, A.P.C’s, vintage Levi’s, Wings + Horns and a buch of other brands that I fuck with. Generally though, even with the 35% discount, most things are still in the triple digits and as such, I cannot afford them (sigh). BUT, I spot a grey Wings + Horns henley. I’m all “Oh shit, I’ll get this. It’s on sale.” I bring it up to the register and the rep tells me “The sale doesn’t apply to that, but we won’t charge you taxes.” Now a financially responsible person would go “Oh ok, then I change my mind.” But remember, I’m not that kind of person so instead I say “Whatever, it’s fine” and proceed to discuss A$AP Rocky and how he’s blowing up. As it turns out, not only do I pick out expensive things, I pick out items that aren’t on sale.
Did I proceed to pay for the henley because I wanted it? Yah. But it’s also cause I didn’t want to look like I couldn’t afford it. ‘Cause that’s embarrassing. Do I feel guilty? Sorta. But it’s always worth it.
